Peak Oil Film Festival

A Crude Awakening [90 min]

This film has been referred to as ” Another Inconvenient Truth”

Compelling, intelligent, and highly entertaining, the film visits with the world’s top experts and comes to a startling, but logical conclusion – our industrial society, built on cheap and readily available oil, must be completely re-imagined and overhauled.

“These are not doomsday scenarios from conspiracy theorists, but hard scientific facts backed by serious research.” Editor of New York Times

“a visually stunning, boldly prophetic testament which provokes not just thought but action.”

“one of the most frightening films you are ever likely to see.”

“The thing that impressed me the most about A Crude Awakening was the fact that the information was presented in a relatively non-slanted way; this wasn’t a Michael Moore type of”documentary” rather it was, in essence, an hour and a half long public service announcement asking us to wake up to the reality that at some point the world is going to run

out of oil and we need to take steps now to ensure that when that day comes we’ll be prepared.”

Crude Impact [90 min]

This film is similar to Crude Awakening with more somber intelligent analysis, but greater focus on the damage oil has done to producer countries. Voted Best of Fest at DOC NZ 2007 [NZ Documentary Film Festival]

Peak Oil Imposed by Nature [30 min]

This film is centred on the work of petroleum geologist Colin Campbell who was an early ” Whistle Blower” in the Peak Oil Movement. Campbell had a prominent role in the development of the North Sea oil fields and this documentary was made in Norway, so it includes footage of the Norwegian oil industry and oil experts

History of Oil [40 min]
A brilliantly funny stand-up comedy act by British comedian Robert Newman about Peak Oil and the History of Oil. Interspersed with creative skits and set in an old Victorian theatre with people dressed in period costume. A team on bicycles powers the stage lighting. “Wickedly funny and witty as hell”

Arithmetic, Population and Energy [70 min]

“The greatest failing of mankind, is the inability to understand the exponential function” Arithmetic Professor Al Bartlett. Of all the DVD`s I have shown people this one has had one of the greatest impacts. It is amazing what a crusty eighty year old man sitting in a lecture theatre can do to people, but that is because his mind is still as clear as a bell and he does not miss a beat. A common comment about this documentary “Riveting”

End of Suburbia [80 min]

The first documentary to be made about Peak Oil and now considered to be a prophetic classic. Every card-carrying Peak Oiler has seen this documentary at least six times.

But the standout star of the film is author and critic of contemporary culture, James Howard Kunstler. The sometimes humorous and always entertaining presence of Kunstler is prominent throughout the documentary–and for good reason. He grabs your attention. He explains in refreshingly blunt, easy-to-comprehend language that suburbia is screwed.

Escape From Suburbia [95 min]

And what will YOU do as energy prices skyrocket and the Oil Age draws to a close? This film looks at responses by individuals and communities. But ultimately for most of us, it is not about escaping from suburbia, but about re-inventing it, re-inhabitating it, so a better title for this documentary would have been “Greening of Suburbia”.

Greening of Cuba [40 min]

How Cuba became a Self-Sufficient Organic Nation. Plenty of cigar smoking campesinos [smallscale farmers], lots of singing and humour, a testament to how rich and fulfilling Post-Peak Oil Life can be.

The Power of Community [How Cuba survived Peak Oil]

[50 min]

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba’s economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens.

Winner of for Best International Film at NZ /Aotearoa Environmental Film Awards out of 17 entries

Life at the End of Empire [What a way to go]

An unremittingly grim documentary about one man`s personal nightmare. This film tells Tim Bennet`s story as he grows up in a conservative rural American family, then becomes environmentally aware in the 70`s, followed by having a family and pursuing a career in the 80`s and 90`s, where he went to “sleep”, but only to wake up in the early 21st century to a terrible nightmare. The simultaneous disasters of Peak Oil, Climate Chaos, Ecosystem Collapse, Population Overshoot and Resource Depletion.

A powerfully visual documentary combined with interviews with leading experts and scientists. I have only one word for this film ,”haunting”.

Global Energy Peak [60 min]

David Holmgren cofounder of Permaculture presents the different response scenarios to Peak Oil; Techno-Fantasy, Green-Tech Stability, Creative Energy Descent and Atlantis.

The best option is Creative Energy Descent using Permaculture Principles. What struck me in this DVD was the wisdom and humanity of this man.
